Position Overview
The ideal Principal Human Factors Engineer (HFE) is an expert in understanding research design and uncovering meaningful insights to drive design decisions. The HFE should have a profound interest in the medical device space and are looking to have a positive impact on users in homes and doctor’s offices across the country. This client is all about putting the “human” in human factors and will be expected to moderate studies and work with test subjects. The ideal candidate thrives in a highly collaborative environment with designers, mechanical engineers and a variety of multidisciplinary roles. They are a pipeline and advocate for human factors who are eager to make others as passionate about the subject matter as they are. In this role the HFE wil gain exposure, work with external partners, exercise more leadership and grow within the position. This employer is also open to flexible work arrangements for candidates in the southern California area.
Principal Responsibilities
Research: Plan design studies, Write protocol, recruit, coordinate test facility, moderate, analyze, write reports, and provide purposeful best practice recommendations to clients.
Lead presentations to clients. Project management. Provide the design team with expert and meaningful input based on design research and best practices in human factors for product development on a regular basis
Design oversight during engineering / manufacturing, perform other job-related duties as assigned
Experience Requirements
Experience developing, running and leading design research/usability testing
Comfortable in leading research in medical and related environments
Strong leadership and presentation skills
Administered formative and summative testing
General knowledge of medical procedures and environments
Planning and executing design research from start to finish
Clearly written reports and management of deliverables
Coordinate research with Design and Engineering teams
Additional Training, Skills, Knowledge, and/or Experience
Specific skills in Cognitive Psychology (Masters or PhD) (Plus)
Specific training courses in Human Factors Certificate (Plus)
General experience in Formative and Summative Testing using FDA Guidelines (Plus)
Experience in the following areas
Competitive product and environment benchmarking and analysis
Surveys for user group studies and web based research
Ethnography and Cognitive analysis
Workflow and Task analysis
Development of Personas, Storyboards, and Use-cases
Human Factors and Heuristic reviews
Safety and issue analysis
Usability testing and validation
Practical use of testing software and video recording instruments
